Spring vacation destinations

In a down economy, the most affordable way for sports fans to see their favorite baseball teams is during spring training. For those of us fortunate enough to live in Florida, sixteen major league teams train around the state in what is commonly referred to as the Grapefruit League. The remaining teams hold their pre-season in Arizona.

Spring training is a great opportunity for most to sit back, have a few cold ones in the Florida sun and heckle the opposing team as if you were at your local jai alai fronton. Spring training runs from February 25 to April 4. Here’s a breakdown of which teams practice around you in case you decide to visit:

Atlanta Braves Champion Stadium, Lake Buena Vista

These are not the same Braves that won 14 consecutive NL division titles. While they still boast Chipper Jones and a veteran Tom Glavine, this team will likely continue to lag behind the Mets and Phillies. But hey, isn’t a trip to Disney always fun? Ticket prices range from $15-28, about the same price as a soft drink in the amusement park and a snapshot with Mickey.

Baltimore Orioles Fort Lauderdale Stadium, Fort Lauderdale

Unfortunately for Orioles fans, Cal Ripken, Jr. is not walking through that door any time soon. Being marooned in the AL East with the Yanks, Sox and the upstart Rays means it will be very difficult for the Orioles to be competitive. Tickets range from $10-22. Catch them now while they have a chance to win a game.

Boston Red Sox City of Palms Park, Fort Myers

With two titles in the last five years, which is two more than they had won the previous eighty years, many consider Boston the new Evil Empire. The AL East will once again be competitive and the Sox should be in the thick of things. Ticket prices range from $10 to $46 which is a bargain considering getting a ticket to Fenway Park is nearly impossible.

Cincinnati Reds Ed Smith Stadium, Sarasota

The Reds young pitching staff should keep them in contention. The question is whether they have enough hitting to give them any run support. Seeing these hurlers in action while they’re young might be worth the trip if you’re anywhere near Sarasota. Tickets are a reasonable $9-18

Detroit Tigers Joker Marchant Stadium, Lakeland

Detroit has the talent to once again compete for an AL Central crown. And $8-21 is always worth the price admission to see Jim Leyland
