My dad taught me how to play baseball. A lot of that teaching took place from the bleacher seats in right field and sometimes behind third base at Fenway. His traditional activities were; a bag of peanuts before the third inning; hot dog and a coke by the sixth, and yup, cracker jacks in the seventh (during the stretch).
When a batter would hit a hard drive or fly ball he would make me watch the defensive players and the base runners rather than watch the flight of the ball. He would say that maybe he and I were the only ones in the park seeing the real action and gaining an understanding of the game and how teams played their positions.
Being a ‘SOX’ fan is no different than being any team fan. You love the city, the players, the ballpark, etc. But I will always remember my dad and how he taught me the fundamentals of “America’s Pastime”.Oh! Yes, I loved the autographed baseball I received from “Teddy Ballgame” when I was 10 yrs old.
